NRCS PROGRAMS:  THERE ARE DIFFERENT KINDS OF PROGRAMS FOR DIFFERENT KINDS OF PRACTICES

Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP
This is a voluntary program that porvides financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers through contracts up to a maximum term of ten years in length.  these contracts provide financial assistance to help plan and implement conservation practices that address natural resource concerns and for opportunities to improve soil, water, plant, animal, air and related resources on agricultural land and non-industrial private forest land.   In addition, the purpose of EQIP is to help producers meet Federal, State, Tribal and local enviromental regulations..
Conservation Technical Assistance (CTA)
This program is the help NRCS and its partners provide to land users to address opportunities, concerns, and problems related to the use of natural resources and to help land users make sound natural resource management decisions on private, tribal, and other non-federal lands.  This assistance can help land users to maintain and improve private lands and their management. Implement better land management technologies and protect and improve water quality and quantity.  Maintain and improve wildlife and fish habitat, enhance recreational opportunities on their land and maintain and improve the aesthetic character of private land. Also, Explore opportunities to diversify agricultural operations and develop and apply sustainable agricultural systems.
Conservation Reserve Program (CRP)
This program is a voluntary program for agricultural landowners.  Through CRP, you can receive annual rental payments and cost-share/assistance to establish long-term, resource conserving covers on eligible farmland.  CRP protects millions of acres of American topsoil from erosion and is designed to safeguard the Nation's natural resources.  By reducing water runoff and sedimentation, CRP protects groundwater and helps improve the condition of lakes, rivers, ponds, and streams.  Acreage enrolled in the CRP is planted to resource-conserving vegetative covers, making the program a major contributor to increased wildlife populations in many parts of the country. CRP is administered by the USDA Farm service agency. http://www.fsa.usda.gov/
Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP)
This program is a voluntary conservation program that encourages producers to address resource concerns in a comprehensive manner by undertaking additional conservation activities and improving, maintaining, and managing existing conservation activities.
CSP encourages land stewards to improve their conservation performance by installing and adopting additional activities, and improving, maintaining, and managing existing activities on agricultural land and non-industrial private forest land.  NRCS will make CSP available nationwide on a continuous application basis.

BASICS OF HIGH TUNNEL PRODUCTION

WHAT ARE HIGH TUNNELS?
1.High tunnels are a separate intense technology which allows crops to be grown up to several weeks earlier and later and eliminates considerable risk.
2. Structures resemble some greenhouses - appearance only.
3. Uses limited artificial heat primarily in emergencies.
4. Uses limited artificial ventilation such as fans, tubes or forced air.
5. Plants are grwn in the ground.
6. Many shapes and sizes.

ADVANTAGES OF HIGH TUNNELS
1. Greater plant yield potenital
2. Crop mix diversity
3 .Very cost effective
4. Reduced relliace on pesticides
5. Compatible with organic production practices
6. 4-8 weeks earlier production in the spring
7. 2-5 weeks later possible production in the fall
8. Grow crops not usually grown in the area
9. Better disease control k
10.Water control
11.Reduced cull fruit

YIELD POTENTIAL AND NUTRIENT NEED
1. Yields in a high tunnel are usually greater than the yield obtained in the field.
2. High tunnel yields will require more nutrients but knowing how much to apply is a challenge

NRCS AND SEASONAL HIGH TUNNELS
Funded through the Environmental quality incentives Program (Eqip)
Eqip is a voluntary program
Eqip offers financial assistance to producers to address resource concerns
Help extend the growing season
Participanats much successfully complete the project and are reimbursed.
Applications are ranked to determine funding selections
Programs are under continuous sign-up
Sign-Up ending dates are announced to establish funding periods.

ELIGIBILITY FOR EQIP FUNDS
Financial Assistance to Build A Seasonal High Tunnel
Farmer is reimbursed $2.09 per square foot
Organic farmer is reimbursed $2.62 per square foot
Historically underserved farmer is reimbursed $3.14 per square foot.
The NRCS maximum payment is for a total of 2, 178 square feet of high tunnels, regardless of the number of high tunnels installed.
HIGH TUNNEL REQUIREMENTS
Farmer buys a high tunnel kit from a commercial manufacturer
Farmer constructs the high tunnel according to the makers instructions
Must build on croppable land
prepare the site and prepare to runoff and erosion control
Crops must be planted directly in the soil
Use a minimum of 6ml greenhouse UV resistant polyethylene covers.
Maintain for 4 years.  Farmer is responsible for maintenance cost.
Cannot be used for housing livestock
***IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN GETTING ON A HIGH TUNNEL PROGRAM.. GET INTOUCH WITH NRCS OR THE BAXTER COUNTY CONSERVATION DISTRICT FOR AN APPLICATION AND TO TALK SOMEONE WITH ALL THE INFO YOU WILL NEED TO PROCEED.
